Hydroseeding & Erosion Control: Stabilizing Swales for Long-Term Stormwater Management

Swales play an important role in managing stormwater runoff, but without proper stabilization, concentrated water flow can lead to soil erosion, sediment movement, and long-term site challenges.

Recently, Riparia Environmental partnered with Goodfellow Bros. on a swale erosion control project in Hillsboro, OR. To protect the area from stormwater runoff and promote long-term soil stability, our crew applied hydroseed and installed straw erosion control blankets and jute matting along the swale.

How the Process Works

Hydroseeding provides an efficient way to establish vegetation across exposed soil. The application combines seed, fertilizer, fiber mulch, and soil tackifiers into a slurry that is sprayed evenly across the surface. This helps provide consistent seed-to-soil contact, supports moisture retention, and encourages vegetation growth.

Since newly seeded areas are vulnerable to flowing water, additional erosion control measures are essential, particularly in areas like swales where stormwater naturally concentrates.

Straw blankets and jute matting are secured along the swale floor and banks to help hold soil in place. These biodegradable materials reduce the impact of flowing water, slow surface runoff, retain moisture, and help prevent sediment from washing downstream while vegetation becomes established.

Building Long-Term Stability Through Vegetation

As the seeded grasses begin to grow, their root systems help bind the soil together, creating a more stable vegetated surface that can withstand stormwater flows. Over time, the natural straw and jute materials (biodegradable erosion control and landscaping blankets) break down, allowing the established vegetation to provide ongoing erosion protection.

Combining hydroseeding with erosion control matting is an effective approach to stabilizing exposed soils, reducing sediment movement, and supporting the long-term function of stormwater management systems.

At Riparia Environmental, we understand that successful site stabilization involves more than addressing immediate erosion concerns. It’s about establishing sustainable solutions that support healthy landscapes and protect surrounding natural resources.
