Design & Guidance Tailored to Your Needs

Riparia delivers stormwater design and consultation services through our close partnership with MacKay, giving clients direct access to licensed engineers who design functional, compliant stormwater systems. We take the time to fully understand your needs, ensure your voice is heard throughout the process, and implement solutions that reflect your goals. Whether you need a system redesign, SWPPP consultation, help navigating a permit, or a full retrofit of a failing facility, we provide the engineering depth and field experience to see it through.

Who This Is For

  • HOAs with failing stormwater assets that need to be evaluated and redesigned to handle existing site conditions, with infrastructure that will perform reliably for the long-term.

  • Industrial facilities navigating stormwater permit compliance who need outside expertise to understand what their permit actually requires, develop an executable compliance plan, and ensure the ongoing work gets done correctly and documented properly.

  • Developers looking to upgrade stormwater infrastructure at an existing site to increase treatment capacity, improve system function, or bring aging infrastructure up to current standards as part of a broader site improvement effort.

What To Expect

Riparia approaches every design and consultation engagement with a clear focus on helping clients make informed decisions. We evaluate your situation thoroughly and present alternatives with honest assessments of cost, maintenance burden, and return on investment.

  • Situation Evaluation & Analysis: We assess the existing conditions and present a clear set of alternatives—each evaluated for potential return on investment, long-term maintenance implications, and suitability to your site and goals.
  • Suitability Analysis & Options Review: We walk clients through each option in the context of the site—evaluating applicability, feasibility, and how well each alternative meets the project’s core objectives in regards to cost and future maintenance.

How We Work

  • 1. Needs Assessment

We begin with a direct conversation about your situation, goals, and constraints. This step is key to gain full understanding of what you’re looking to accomplish and what defines a successful outcome.

  • 2. Document Review & Site Research

We review all relevant documentation—as-builts, permit conditions, maintenance records, engineering reports, and applicable regulatory standards—and research site conditions to develop intentional work plans based on your specific needs.

  • 3. Develop & Communicate the Action Plan

Based on our needs assessment and research, we develop a clear plan of action and walk you through it. We communicate with you throughout the design and planning process to deliver targeted solutions that reflect your input and buy-in.

  • 4. Submit Design or Report

Depending on your needs, we deliver substantiated engineering design for a new or retrofitted stormwater system, a compliance report, a permit response, or other formal work—prepared to meet the applicable regulatory and technical standards.

  • 5. Construction Oversight & Process Management

If requested, Riparia can oversee construction of the designed system or manage the broader implementation process. We ensure that the work in the field matches the approved design and monitor field conditions throughout.

  • Timeline

Project timelines vary depending on the scope of design work, regulatory review requirements, and whether construction is included. Contact Riparia for a project-specific timeline estimate.

Why Stormwater Design & Consultation Matters

Most property owners and facility operators don’t have licensed stormwater engineers on staff and require outside support. How a system is designed, sized, and permitted has lasting consequences for performance, maintenance costs, and ongoing compliance. Getting it right from the start is one of the impactful investments you can make in your infrastructure.

Most Organizations Need Outside Expertise

Stormwater design and permitting requires specialized knowledge most owners don’t have in-house. Without qualified support, permit obligations get misunderstood, maintenance gets performed incorrectly, and small issues turn into expensive challenges.

Poorly Designed Systems Create Lasting Problems

A system that isn’t properly designed will underperform from day one—leading to flooding, erosion, compliance failures, and escalating costs. Sound design prevents those problems before they start.

Licensed Engineering Ensures the System is Sized Correctly

Stormwater systems must be engineered to handle actual site flow volumes and pollutant loads. A design prepared by a licensed engineer provides both technical confidence and the permit documentation regulators require.

Van Mall Stormwater Retrofit — HOA

A homeowners association came to Riparia with a repeatedly failing swale system. The root cause being a high-shade environment that prevented the vegetation growth the system depended on to function. Riparia evaluated the situation and presented the client with two options: return the system to its original design or convert to a different facility type. Both options were analyzed with full lifecycle cost projections, feasibility assessments, and relative risk evaluations. The client selected the proposed retrofit scope, converting two sections of the system to a new facility type and reconfiguring a third. Riparia managed engineering, permitting, and installation through to completion while keeping the client informed throughout with regular updates, photos, and status reports.
